چکیده
This book is an outgrowth of an earlier text ‘Operations Scheduling with Applications in Manufacturing and Services’ by X. Chao and M. Pinedo from 1999. The new version has been completely reorganized and extended in several directions. As the title indicates, the application areas considered in the book can be divided into two major parts: scheduling applications and services applications. This subdivision is rather useful since manufacturing and service models are very different. Planning and scheduling in service industries is often more concerned with capacity and yield management and in contrast to manufacturing systems, the number of resources may vary over time in service systems. As a consequence, algorithms used in service settings tend to be rather different from those used in manufacturing settings. The book consists of four parts and six appendices, and it also contains a CD-ROM that gives several PowerPoint slides. Part I (Chapters 1–3) is of introductory nature and presents some preliminaries. Nine examples that illustrate the role of planning and scheduling in real life situations are given. Chapters 2 and 3 describe the basic characteristics of the manufacturing and service models. Part II (Chapters 4–8) covers five areas of planning and scheduling in manufacturing: project scheduling, machine scheduling, flexible assembly systems, economic lot scheduling as well as planning and scheduling in supply chains. As an example, the machine scheduling chapter (Chapter 5; 33 pages) gives first a few comments on single and parallel machine problems. It presents a mathematical programming formulation for the job shop scheduling problem with makespan

متن کامل05281 Abstracts Collection - Simulation & Scheduling: Companions or Competitors for Improving the Performance of Manufacturing Systems
Scheduling is a critical need for manufacturing and service systems, and it is not exaggeration to say that e ective and timely scheduling can be the di erence between success and failure in an era when customers demand rapid response, product customization and low prices. As a result, there has been an explosion of Deterministic Scheduling papers over the decade with a strong group of research...
متن کاملSimulation-based performance measurement and analysis: an industrial application
Scheduling problems occur in a lot of application fields such as production, timetabling and computer systems. These problems have already been widely studied and modeled (Carlier and Chrétienne, 1988; Pinedo, 1995; Pinedo and Chao, 1999; Vernadat, 1999). Each problem has its own characteristics; it is much more complicated when tackling real industrial problems. Starting from object-oriented t...
متن کاملPlanning and Scheduling in Supply Chains: An Overview of Issues in Practice
T paper gives an overview of the theory and practice of planning and scheduling in supply chains. It first gives an overview of the various planning and scheduling models that have been studied in the literature, including lot sizing models and machine scheduling models. It subsequently categorizes the various industrial sectors in which planning and scheduling in the supply chains are importan...
